Fuel polishing is a vital part of keeping your fuel clean and equipment running properly, but it is also something that often gets forgotten about. BMS offers one-off fuel polishing or as part of a maintenance contract which we advise to be done at least 1 time a year, however, we will always suggest fitting a fuel polishing system to the fuel tank which will polish the fuel automatically giving you complete peace of mind that the fuel you are using will not clog up any equipment.

What is Fuel Polishing?

Fuel polishing is a process of cleaning and filtering fuel to remove contaminants such as water, sediment, and microbial growth. This process is essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of engines, generators, and other equipment that rely on fuel.

Many businesses who have a fuel tank no matter the size are unaware of how mission critical fuel polishing is to keep their fuel tank running smoothly and to prevent generators from getting blocked.

When fuel has been sat around or not cleaned for too long it can become “sludgy” and water can appear, this is when the fuel will start to get bugs, making it unusable and eventually block up your generators. However, this can easily be prevented with a top of the market fuel polishing kit from “Fleury” attached to the fuel tank, the kit will filter the fuel, keeping it moving and giving the fuel a clean at the same time, combined with a yearly service is essential for the well-being of your fuel tank and generators.

How often should fuel be polished?

Diesel fuel will start to degrade 3-6 months after refining. Therefore a plan needs to be in place to ensure you fuel does not start to block up your generators. If you have a fuel tank that does not get used every day, maybe on a back up generator, then fuel polishing is something you MUST know about.

Fuel should be polished at least 1 time a year – this is the minimum amount we recommended to ensure the fuel you are using is fit for purpose, however we suggest fitting a fuel polishing kit (link) the kit will filter all the fuel through each day to keep the fuel clean and moving to stop any chance of growth, this way you know when you go to use the tank the fuel is not going to cause you any issues.
