Objective: Replace the old, malfunctioning oil tank gauge and alarm system with a more modern, reliable solution, ensuring accurate fuel level monitoring and enhanced safety features.

The Challenge

The client’s existing oil tank monitoring system was outdated and no longer functioning correctly. With an unreliable gauge and alarm system in place, the risk of overfilling or fuel depletion was a major concern. The client required a solution that would provide precise level readings, alert them to critical tank conditions, and be easy to maintain.

Our Solution: A modernised alarm system upgrade

BMS was tasked with designing and implementing a modern alarm and gauge system to ensure the client could monitor their tank’s levels safely and effectively. Here’s what the upgrade process entailed:

• Electrically isolating and removing the old system

The first step was to safely decommission and remove the existing alarm system and faulty gauge unit, ensuring no disruption to the facility’s operations.

• Installing a new GRP clear-front enclosure

We introduced a new enclosure featuring a calibrated level display, high and low-level alarms, and an external high-intensity sounder. The sounder included a mute button for easy management in case of a false alarm or routine operation.

• Optimal placement for the new system

To improve accessibility and functionality, we mounted the new enclosure on the external bund wall, strategically positioning it as close to the fill point as possible for easy monitoring during refuelling.

• Isolating the existing supply and connecting new components

We disconnected the power supply to the old alarm system and used a junction box to integrate it with the newly installed components, ensuring the entire system was seamlessly powered and fully operational.

• Installing new probes and gauge capillaries

With precision in mind, we installed new probes and capillaries to ensure accurate level readings from the tank.

• Commissioning the system

Once the installation was complete, we carefully commissioned the gauge and alarm system, testing the full functionality of the alarms, sounder, and level display. This included setting thresholds for the high and low-level alerts.
